Chapter 6
Relinquish (41)- ". Males, too, relinquished the long childish hair..."
Chapter 7
Precision- exactness-- "precision of language was one of the most important jobs of children"
Chapter 8
Integrity (p. 59)- knowing the difference between right and wrong and knowing not to be in the wrong--"Integrity- Jonas, like all of us..."

Quotes:
Chapter 1
Animals . . .Neither child knew what the word meant, exactly, but it was often used to describe someone uneducated or clumsy, someone who didn't fit in. (p. 7)
How could they not know what animals are?? They were eating fish so they must have an idea of what an animal is. It is kind of strange because animals are big parts in our lives- food, transportation (horses) in some places, pets, companions that love you!! If they don't have animals they are missing a vital realm of feelings and experiences.
Chapter 2
"But to be honest, Jonas," his father said, "for me there was not the element of suspense that there is with your Ceremony. Because I was already fairly certain of what my Assignment was to be."
How could you know?? The Elders aren't supposed to tell you unless you spent all of your hours at a certain place. But maybe he did. No one knows their job unless... you had threatened an elder so you could get the job you wanted and then you would know and you just tell people "Oh yeah, I asked an Elder and he said I was going to be a _!!!"
Chapter 3
The apple had changed. Just for an instant. It had changed in mid-air, he remembered. Then it was in his hand, and he looked at it carefully, but it was the same apple. Unchanged. The same size and shape: a perfect sphere. The same nondescript shade. (p. 24)
But apples aren't nondescript and they aren’t a perfect sphere... what the heck is going on here?? Apples are crimson or light green or a bright yellow. Nondescript means "lacking descriptive features or neither one thing or another" so how could an apple not be crimson rather than neon orange or bright purple? Also, a sphere is like a bouncy ball not an apple. Apples are like a sphere on top of an upside down crown connected, it can't be a perfect sphere"
Chapter 4
"What happens when they make the actual release? Where exactly did Roberto go?" (p. 32)
Good question! Where the heck DO these people go?? Do they just disappear or are they just bussed out to someplace? Who knows? Maybe they throw them into the wild and wait for them to die for not liking their community. Maybe, really, the Committee of Elders is a group of awful people who want to kill everyone and have an utopia to themselves!!
Chapter 5
"You're ready for the pills, that's all. That's the treatment for Stirrings."
What if the pills do something creepy to your brain so you are like a robot and follow all the rules and be perfect... sort of like in Uglies. The adults do seem to be kind of unemotional. Whenever they say something they are always happy sounding as if they don't care. They always have that tone; even while describing something they disliked or were bored of. It creeps me out. I'm not saying that I imagine them like that it is just the words they use and the way the author describes it. Lois Lowry uses words like: "chipperly said", 'happily stated", or "said excitedly" which disturbs me because no one is happy all the time.
Chapter 6
It was as if the first Caleb were returning.
That is disturbing because they just have a random replacement and not the original Caleb as if they don't really care. They don't value an individual life. Also they obviously don't have to be connected to their children because they didn't actually parent that child. Many people would never do such a thing because they feel very connected but here there is no such thing as love.
Chapter 7
He couldn't seem to stop, though for each lapse the discipline wand came again, escalating to a series of painful lashes that left marks on Asher's legs. Eventually, for a period of time, Asher stopped talking altogether, when he was a Three.
Why would someone whip a kid just because they didn't say the right thing?? What if a kid was born with a stutter? He would be whipped all the time until he died!!! That is an unruly and horrible thing to do to a child. They could be traumatized or afraid to even leave their "dwelling". They would definitely be released. Also, after knowing that, so many people could be released and then there wouldn't be enough people to run the community and everything would fall apart.
Chapter 8
Jonas has been selected to be our next Receiver of Memory (p. 57)
"What the heck is the Receiver of Memory?" I thought at first, " Is he like one of the major domo type people that learn about everything or is he the person who the town goes to for advice and wisdom?" Turns out I was pretty close he's is both. The thing that really surprised me is that he learns through actual memories being transferred between the minds of the Giver and Receiver.
Chapter 9
"What happened to her?” he asked nervously. But his parents looked blank. "We don't know."
At first I thought, "This is very mysterious..." but afterward I realized that they were trained to lie to people. Also it is obvious that they knew because they had probably suffered from Rosemary being released and were (most likely) told the story. What I want to know is why they would lie to Jonas if he could be following the same fate? What if he found out after the fact?
Chapter 10
He couldn't imagine what the thousands of pages contained. (p. 71)
Why? He goes to school. He has textbooks (or at least he should) and they have many pages of information. But if they don't know of war and conquerers maybe they didn't have textbooks. If they didn't have such things I guess it would be hard to think of ways to fill a book. Also if they had such boring lives and no one was important they obviously wouldn't have biographies or storybooks.
Chapter 11
"Why don't we have snow, and sleds, and hills?"
Why? He’s right it is a good question. How could they exclude such things from a functional society? Kids have to have some fun. Really the idea is just like living in the San Fernando Valley but snow is essential to knowing of wants and having an idea of how other kids have fun. If you didn't know of snow then you wouldn't know of an entire realm of being a kid. You're missing out on dreaming of snowball fights and sledding and making snow angels.
Chapter 12
"We shouldn't have!" Jonas said fiercely (p. 91)
He's right... again you're missing a whole new life without colors and beauty even while you can make bad decisions it doesn't matter. Think of how much color affects us. My mom spent almost a month finding the right color to paint her bedroom with. People decide upon the "it" color of the year and their favorite color and which color carpeting they should buy. Really some are kind of dumb but colors are a way of giving us feelings.
Chapter 13
"We really have to protect people from wrong choices."
Actually (at first) I disagree with Jonas on that topic. At first I also thought "They don't care about you, why should you care about them?" Then I realized that if he didn't care no one would care because he's the only one that can care. He is the one with the wisdom and the memories. He is the one who has choices and he can make a bad decision. He is making a good choice by caring about others.
Chapter 14
"They selected me and you to lift that burden from themselves." (p. 107)
That is just the worst idea imaginable!!! Every one should share the pain. That way everyone would suffer minimal pain and be decently happy instead of one person being tortured day and night and being miserable. The best choice will be to let everyone learn of war and death and hunger. They may be sad but at least no one suffers and everybody will have knowledge and wisdom. But, in order to have such things, you must start out with just a little.
Chapter 15
The Giver looked away, as if he could not bear to see what he had done to Jonas. "Forgive me, " he said.
This is odd... the Giver has never showed signs of feelings such as shame before. He has said he loves Jonas in a fatherly way and he has shown sadness but never regret such as this. Maybe he is more connected to Jonas now more than ever. This could possibly be because Jonas has understood his pain and cared enough to want to help the Giver extinguish that pain. This touches me just a little because it proves that they really know their responsibility and care enough to help each other.
Chapter 16
"And they won't be part of my life anymore . . . And they'll be well cared for and respected." (p. 118)
At first I thought this was a good thing but now I know that they are really killing these old people. This is kind of odd how the older adults are willing to die and can't wait. They probably are acting like this because they are in pain. It is really good that they get to choose but what about the newborns? Their first day gift is to get killed
Chapter 17
"Then I wave bye-bye," he said, in the special sweet voice he used when he spoke to the newchild."
That is just sickening!!! He kills a little baby and he doesn't care!!! He is just being sour in a sweet tone of voice. After thinking this through I realized that all of them are this bad. They all kill babies and they all kill old people and they all don't care!! I would hate living in Jonas' place. I think I would commit suicide or run away.
Chapter 18-19
(free writing)
So Release is really killing people, that's wonderful *snort choke cry*. All those old people really are being killed and the "Oh, they just go to a different community" is a lie. Everyone dies and they don't have feelings so they don't realize how wrong it is to kill people. They murder people. Rosemary basically committed suicide. Gabe is supposed to be killed. The whole idea of another community of just all these sickly people getting cured is just a little too good to be true. Now you have proof that no one cares.
Chapter 20
"She's very efficient at her work, your red-haired friend. Feelings are not part of the life she's learned."
That is really sad. The girl he loves can't love him back and she also kills people. Just wonderful for Jonas, he gets to be the only one that loves people and the only one who values a human life. Jonas should be really sad but his memories (the good ones, at least) have the ability to keep him having something to live for. As always, love hurts but no one thought it could be this horrible.
Chapter 21
"First thing tomorrow morning."
He is going to escape and he will live a life of colors and feelings and choices and, most of all, people that have those things too. He will get to Elsewhere and he will live a good life compared to the one he has now. Jonas will give the community the happiness and torture of centuries long ago and, hopefully, Give them a reason to have feelings and live as everybody else.
Chapters 22-23
What happened to Jonas?
I think that, most likely, he lives and reaches Elsewhere which is probably somewhere in Scotland or Wales. This is my major theory because there is lots of open space there where someone could build a small unknown of community. My second theory is that he backtracked and went back to his changed utopia. I like that one because it is a happy ending. Jonas and the Giver changed their community and everything will be sometimes sad and always beautiful.
